Objectives of the manual

In our culture, we glorify marriage and family life. We have conscious and unconscious expectations from marriage and family. These expectations are internalized by us through socialization.

Marriage may be fulfilling for a number of men and women. But for some, family life can be difficult, or even impossible. Having tried to make her marriage work, a woman may become helpless, exhausted, emotionally fragile or desperate.

Marriages can be difficult due to many reasons, including, lack of affection, sexual problems, differing expectations, differences in worldviews, value systems of habits, economic hardships, dowry harassment, domestic violence, etc. Anyone in a troubled relationship for a long duration may have suffered from emotional trauma. These may be normal responses to their abnormal life situations, and the violence that they may be facing.

As a counselor, you may be trained to deal with various social issues. However, your training may not have covered violence and emotional health. There is a difference between family counseling and mental health counseling. This manual covers the latter part.

This manual will help you:

  • To have a working knowledge about domestic violence, its prevalence and causes
  • To be more aware of the mental health issues in your interaction with your client
  • To make the connection between marital conflict and violence, and how it affects the over all emotional well being of your client
  • To develop mental health counseling skills while dealing with individual women and couples
  • To identify psychological distress in your clients and to be able to resolve matters concerning psychological referral
  • To explore the ethical dilemmas you face in the context of mental health

The manual makes some brief suggestions to help you address your own emotional well being. We hope that this manual will help you to explore your own role and responsibility in providing holistic service to your clients.

Methodology

Majlis, an NGO working in the field of legal rights (www.majlisbombay.org) asked if we would be interested in a joint publication on the subject of mental health, violence and litigation. We did a needs assessment workshop with the Majlis staff to understand the need for such a publication. The writers developed the materials. The booklet was field tested at a MAJLIS training program for the Family Court counselors on February 7th and 8th, 2005, in Mumbai. Following feedback and several rounds of discussions within Bapu and Majlis, the manual was finalized.
